Las Vegas Township Justice Court Seeks Referees and Pro Tempore Judges

The Las Vegas Township Justice Court invites attorneys to apply for positions as small claims referees, traffic referees, or Justices of the peace pro tempore for the 2015-2016 calendar years:

  1.  Small Claims Referees. Pursuant to NRS 4.355 and NRS Chapter 73, the Court is seeking attorneys in good standing who are interested in serving as Referees in Small Claim hearings. Small-Claims Referees serve on an as-needed basis.
  2. Traffic Referees. Pursuant to NRS 4.355, the Court is seeking attorneys in good standing who are interested in serving as Referees for Traffic cases. These Referees preside over daily court hearings for the general public. Additionally, these Referees may also work with attorneys during “walk-in” attorney sessions that are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week, and during “bulk” attorney sessions where attorneys can resolve large amounts of traffic tickets at one time. Traffic Referees serve on an as-needed basis.
  3. Justices of the Peace Pro Tempore. Pursuant to NRS 4.032, the Court is seeking attorneys in good standing who are interested in serving as Justices of the Peace Pro Tempore on an as-needed basis to preside over various types of criminal and civil matters when the Justices of the Peace are unavailable.

An applicant may apply and be selected for any or all of the above categories. However, the following rules apply:

(A) If an applicant is chosen to serve as a Justice of the Peace Pro Tempore, that applicant may not personally appear as counsel in any case in the Las Vegas Justice     Court during his or her term of service. (This restriction has been in effect for several years.)

(B) If an applicant is chosen to serve as a Small-Claims Referee, that applicant may not personally appear as counsel in a small-claims case in the Las Vegas Justice Court during his or her term of service. (This is a new restriction.)

(C) If an applicant is chosen to serve as a Traffic Referee, that applicant may not personally appear as counsel in a traffic matter in the Las Vegas Justice Court during his or her term of service. (This is a new restriction. It applies to appearances for walk-in attorney sessions, appearances for bulk attorney sessions, appearances for pretrial negotiations in traffic cases, and appearances for traffic trials.)

Attorneys who are interested in serving as Small Claims Referees, Traffic Referees, or Justices of the Peace Pro Tempore must submit a letter of interest which identifies the position(s) sought, along with a resume, on or after June 16, 2014, and no later than 5:00 PM on July 18, 2014, to:
