Southern Nevada Senior Law Program (SLP) Offers legal services to individuals who are 60 years of age or over, the Senior Citizens Law Project can help with many issues, including: simple wills (the law project does not prepare living trusts); advance directives (living wills and durable power of attorney for health care); power of attorney (general and special); long-term health care planning issues; consumer disputes and small claims instructions; landlord/tenant disputes, Social Security problems and other public entitlements; homesteads; termination of joint tenancy; affidavits of entitlements; intervention of elder abuse matters; and legal advice, information and referrals. The SCLP also assists hundreds of seniors annually with the preparation of legal pleadings including but not limited to Ex Parte Petitions and Orders to transfer small estates, open safe deposit boxes, name changes, sealing records and release of medical records. City of Las Vegas - Victim Witness Advocate Unit The Victim Advocate Unit works in cooperation with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Domestic Violence Unit. Victims and witnesses are encouraged to speak with a Victim Witness Advocate in the city's Victim Advocate Unit. An advocate will listen to concerns and be available throughout the court process. Clark County Bar Association (CCBA)  is a 501(c)(6), non-profit, voluntary member organization that includes members throughout the county, state and nation. Clark County District Attorney's Office is the legal branch of local government representing the Clark County Commission and other county agencies in administrative and litigation matters. The Clark County District Attorney's Office maintains four divisions. The Civil Division provides the defense of all civil suits brought against the county and against officers and employees in civil actions based on alleged acts or omissions relating to their public duties and employment; to prosecute all civil actions for the recovery of debts accruing to the county; to bring civil actions for abatement of nuisances; to attend administrative hearings; to prosecute all other civil actions by the county as directed by the Board of County Commissioners; to give legal opinions to all county, township and district officers within the county on all matters relating to the duties of their respective offices; and to attend meetings of the Board of County Commissioners, render opinions on legal questions that arise during those meetings, and oppose such accounts or claims as are deemed illegal or unjust. Clark County Department of Family Services is the local public agency whose role is to help keep children safe, as required by the federal Adoption and Safe Families Act. The agency was formed on July 1, 2002 in response to the merger of state and county child welfare services. • Child Haven and emergency shelter homes provide a temporary, safe, nurturing environment for children who cannot safely remain with their families. When a child cannot remain with family, the goal is to place the child in a safe, nurturing environment. Children are temporarily placed in Child Haven or an emergency shelter home. Child Haven is a part of the Clark County Department of Family Services (DFS) and provides temporary care and treatment for abused, neglected and abandoned children between 3 days to 17 years of age. Children are placed into protective custody in Child Haven by police or DFS workers. The Child Haven campus consists of eight cottages, and activity and school centers. Children are assigned to a cottage based on their age and sex. The cottages are capable of housing 12 children each, except for the infants cottage, which is capable of housing 20 infants. Child Haven contracts with licensed shelter homes in the community. Licensed shelter homes provide children with qualified and quality one-on-one care in emergency situations. Foster Parents are specially-trained and state licensed to meet the needs of the children. • Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) is a program which provides a neutral, child-friendly setting for children where they can be interviewed about reports of child abuse, particularly sexual abuse, have forensic medical examinations and receive appropriate therapeutic services. The CAC offers a coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach involving police, prosecutors, child protective workers, therapist and medical personnel working together as a team. • Adoption Services provides an alternative permanent home for children who cannot be reunited safely with their parents. When children cannot be safely reunited with their parents, an alternate plan is made to enable them to have a permanent home. Adoption is one of those alternatives. Adoption is a legal process. An individual who adopts a child has the same rights and responsibilities of a birth parent. When a child with special needs is adopted, the agency may provide ongoing financial support to that child and family. The support is provided through an adoption subsidy. Clark County Neighborhood Justice Center (NJC) was established by the Nevada Legislature in 1991 and provides no-cost information, referral and mediation services to residents of Clark County who have disputes with neighbors, relatives, businesses, landlords, etc. Please note, that the NJC does NOT provide legal advice or an attorney. Mediation services are provided by trained volunteers from a cross-section of the community. The Neighborhood Justice Center has also established innovative youth programs to promote peaceful conflict resolution. These programs include the School Peer Mediation Program, the Culture of Peace Program, and the Conflict Intervention Team. The NJC helps residents of Clark County resolve conflicts at no cost through a comprehensive information and referral program and through mediation services. The NJC can assist in a variety of disputes, including neighborhood disputes, consumer/merchant disputes, employer/employee disputes, family disputes, landlord/tenant disputes, hospital-doctor/patient disputes, and parent/child disputes. The NJC will not mediate problems that cannot be settled through negotiation, matters involving violent activity, and those in which one of the parties refuses to willingly participate. This office represents indigents charged with criminal offenses filed in the Eighth Judicial District Court, and the Justice Courts in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, and all other jurisdictions in Clark County. Clark County Victim-Witness Assistance Center (VWAC) is a unit within the Clark County District Attorney's Office. It has been in operation since 1976, providing services to victims and witnesses of crime in the community of Clark County, Nevada.

The staff of VWAC is able to provide the following assistance to you:

    Initial notification of the status of your case, by mail
    Explanation of court procedures
    Transportation to and from court, if necessary
    Assistance in applying for crime compensation
    Expediting the return of property held as evidence
    Providing vouchers for witness fees
    Processing restitution payments
    Referral to appropriate social service agencies

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Deparment also has a Victim Advocates program through their Victim Services detail. Victim Advocates can be reached at 229-2955. They are generally available in the office from 7:00 Am to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. While advocates are available to provide support to the victims of all crime categories, they do not have financial resources to replace or repair property damaged during the crime. It is the mission of the Victim Services Detail to help victims of crime by providing crisis intervention, support, referrals, and encouraging safety practices to reduce the likelihood of future victimization. Victim Services educates and empowers victims to seek justice by participating in investigations and following through with prosecution. Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (LACSN) is a private, non-profit, public interest law firm that provides free legal information, counseling and representation to eligible low-income residents of Clark County, Nevada. Eligibility for their services is based on household income and the number of people living in the client's household. Types of legal matters handled by LACSN include: helping victims of consumer fraud scams; victims of domestic violence, family law issues, public and private housing violations; Special Education issues; those denied access in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act; restoration of Social Security Benefits; assisting with legal issues for people suffering from HIV / AIDS; and the Children's Attorney Project, which provides representation of abused and neglected children who are in foster placements or are wards of the state. LACSN now does limited immigration work specific to helping non-documented immigrants who are victims of domestic violence get their documentation. Nevada Attorney for Injured Workers (NAIW) represents injured workers in litigation seeking workers' compensation benefits. A division of the State of Nevada's Department of Business & Industry, NAIW answers questions regarding the Nevada workers' compensation system and benefits and particular situations. The job of NAIW is to assist injured workers through the administrative process in their efforts to obtain deserved workers' compensation benefits in accordance with the Nevada statutory scheme. Wiener-Rogers Law Library is located on the University of Nevada-Las Vegas campus, and is the largest law library in Nevada.
