Southern Nevada Senior Law Program (SLP) Offers legal services to individuals who are 60 years of age or over, the Senior Citizens Law Project can help with many issues, including: simple wills (the law project does not prepare living trusts); advance directives (living wills and durable power of attorney for health care); power of attorney (general and special); long-term health care planning issues; consumer disputes and small claims instructions; landlord/tenant disputes, Social Security problems and other public entitlements; homesteads; termination of joint tenancy; affidavits of entitlements; intervention of elder abuse matters; and legal advice, information and referrals. The SCLP also assists hundreds of seniors annually with the preparation of legal pleadings including but not limited to Ex Parte Petitions and Orders to transfer small estates, open safe deposit boxes, name changes, sealing records and release of medical records. In addition, the SCLP assists seniors with filing Affidavits Claiming Exemption, Writs, Small Claims Affidavits of Complaint, Pro Se Answers and other legal pleadings. The SCLP does NOT presently handle: traffic citations, living trusts; criminal matters; bankruptcies; fee generating cases; guardianships; malpractice cases; divorces or real estate transactions. The administrator of the SCLP is Sugar Vogel. The SCLP assists 4,000 clients annually and serves as a "law office on wheels" as its staff regularly visits seniors at their homes, hospitals, hospice centers and senior centers. City of Las Vegas - Victim Witness Advocate Unit The Victim Advocate Unit works in cooperation with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Domestic Violence Unit. Victims and witnesses are encouraged to speak with a Victim Witness Advocate in the city's Victim Advocate Unit. An advocate will listen to concerns and be available throughout the court process. The advocate may also provide referrals, answer questions, communicate with the prosecutor and accompany the victim or witness to court. Call (702) 229-2525. Clark County Bar Association (CCBA) is a 501(c)(6), non-profit, voluntary member organization that includes members throughout the county, state and nation. Established in 1923, CCBA traditionally has been an organization of attorneys focused on professional development and community service. The actual articles of incorporation for were eventually filed in the 1990. Clark County Clerk's Office maintains five offices to serve the Eighth Judicial District Court - four in Las Vegas and one in Mesquite: civil/criminal, family, marriage bureau, county commission and Mesquite. The clerk's very large and user-friendly Web site offers many features of their office online. Clark County District Attorney's Office is the legal branch of local government representing the Clark County Commission and other county agencies in administrative and litigation matters. The Clark County District Attorney's Office maintains four divisions. The Civil Division provides the defense of all civil suits brought against the county and against officers and employees in civil actions based on alleged acts or omissions relating to their public duties and employment; to prosecute all civil actions for the recovery of debts accruing to the county; to bring civil actions for abatement of nuisances; to attend administrative hearings; to prosecute all other civil actions by the county as directed by the Board of County Commissioners; to give legal opinions to all county, township and district officers within the county on all matters relating to the duties of their respective offices; and to attend meetings of the Board of County Commissioners, render opinions on legal questions that arise during those meetings, and oppose such accounts or claims as are deemed illegal or unjust. The Criminal Division of the office prosecutes all felony crimes and many misdemeanors occurring within Clark County. The Family Support Division enforces child support through the court system. The DA's office also has a Bad Check Unit, located in the Regional Justice Center at 200 Lewis Ave. in Las Vegas and can be reached at (702) 671-4701. The Bad Check Unit provides businesses information and notices. The DA's office also provides extensive services for victims of crime and witnesses are provided through the Victim-Witness Assistance Center (see listing below). Clark County Department of Family Services is the local public agency whose role is to help keep children safe, as required by the federal Adoption and Safe Families Act. The agency was formed on July 1, 2002 in response to the merger of state and county child welfare services. Clark County Family Law Self-Help Center provides forms and information for individuals representing themselves in family court. Clark County Neighborhood Justice Center (NJC) was established by the Nevada Legislature in 1991 and provides no-cost information, referral and mediation services to residents of Clark County who have disputes with neighbors, relatives, businesses, landlords, etc. Please note, that the NJC does NOT provide legal advice or an attorney. Mediation services are provided by trained volunteers from a cross-section of the community. The Neighborhood Justice Center has also established innovative youth programs to promote peaceful conflict resolution. These programs include the School Peer Mediation Program, the Culture of Peace Program, and the Conflict Intervention Team. The NJC helps residents of Clark County resolve conflicts at no cost through a comprehensive information and referral program and through mediation services. The NJC can assist in a variety of disputes, including neighborhood disputes, consumer/merchant disputes, employer/employee disputes, family disputes, landlord/tenant disputes, hospital-doctor/patient disputes, and parent/child disputes. The NJC will not mediate problems that cannot be settled through negotiation, matters involving violent activity, and those in which one of the parties refuses to willingly participate. The Public Defender maintains offices in two locations. The main office is located in the South Third Street Building, 309 S Third St, 2nd Floor, (702) 455-4685. This office represents indigents charged with criminal offenses filed in the Eighth Judicial District Court, and the Justice Courts in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, and all other jurisdictions in Clark County. The Public Defender's Juvenile Office, located in the Family & Youth Services Center, 601 N. Pecos,Las Vegas, NV 89101-2610, Phone: (702) 455-5475, represents juveniles whose parents cannot afford to retain private counsel. The Public Defender's Office CANNOT represent individuals in civil matters. Clark County Victim-Witness Assistance Center (VWAC) is a unit within the Clark County District Attorney's Office. It has been in operation since 1976, providing services to victims and witnesses of crime in the community of Clark County, Nevada. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has a Domestic Violence Unit. To learn more about domestic violence and the services the Domestic Violence Unit offers, call (702) 229-4431. The LVMPD also has several bureaus within the department including, area commands, communications, transportation safety, missing persons, K-9 unit, crime stoppers, mounted police, records, search & rescue, special events, tourist safety, violent crimes, financial/property crime, firearms, gang crimes and homicide. Visit the LVMPD Web site for more information. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Deparment also has a Victim Advocates program through their Victim Services detail. Victim Advocates can be reached at 229-2955. They are generally available in the office from 7:00 Am to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. While advocates are available to provide support to the victims of all crime categories, they do not have financial resources to replace or repair property damaged during the crime. It is the mission of the Victim Services Detail to help victims of crime by providing crisis intervention, support, referrals, and encouraging safety practices to reduce the likelihood of future victimization. Victim Services educates and empowers victims to seek justice by participating in investigations and following through with prosecution. Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (LACSN) is a private, non-profit, public interest law firm that provides free legal information, counseling and representation to eligible low-income residents of Clark County, Nevada. Eligibility for their services is based on household income and the number of people living in the client's household. Types of legal matters handled by LACSN include: helping victims of consumer fraud scams; victims of domestic violence, family law issues, public and private housing violations; Special Education issues; those denied access in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act; restoration of Social Security Benefits; assisting with legal issues for people suffering from HIV / AIDS; and the Children's Attorney Project, which provides representation of abused and neglected children who are in foster placements or are wards of the state. LACSN now does limited immigration work specific to helping non-documented immigrants who are victims of domestic violence get their documentation. LACSN does NOT handle legal matters regarding: personal injury, criminal, worker's comp, employment, unemployment or business law issues. Individuals calling from outside Nevada must dial (702) 382-0504. Nevada Attorney for Injured Workers (NAIW) represents injured workers in litigation seeking workers' compensation benefits. A division of the State of Nevada's Department of Business & Industry, NAIW answers questions regarding the Nevada workers' compensation system and benefits and particular situations. The job of NAIW is to assist injured workers through the administrative process in their efforts to obtain deserved workers' compensation benefits in accordance with the Nevada statutory scheme. Wiener-Rogers Law Library is located on the University of Nevada-Las Vegas campus, and is the largest law library in Nevada.
