January 30, 2015:8th Annual In-House Negotiation Competition

Date: Friday, January 30, 2015
Time: 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Location: William S. Boyd School of Law

Local attorneys, judges, and mediators are needed to step forward and volunteer to judge the competition rounds. Student teams will be negotiating scenarios regarding tort law. Judging the competition qualifies as pro bono publico service (pursuant to NRPC 6.1).

Event Schedule:
5:00 – 5:45 p.m. Dinner
5:45 – 5:55 p.m. Instructions to judges
6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Elimination Rounds
8:30 – 9:30 p.m. Final Round (top 10 teams compete)

At the end of the competition, while scores are being tallied, judges will be asked for feedback on how teams performed and what techniques could be improved. Winners of the competition will be asked to join the Society of Advocates and will represent the Boyd School of Law at the American Bar Association’s next regional negotiation competition.

February 12, 2015: Portrait Session

CCBA members are invited to sit for a professional portrait. The next session is scheduled for:

Drop-ins welcome. The portraits are for CCBA to publish where and when as needed, including in bar publications and websites.

Headshot - 1 image edited, on CD with all print rights for $79 or 2 images for $100. Good for printing, business cards or internet use. This special is only available to CCBA members who purchase on the day of their photo session. CCBA gets one high-resolution, electronic photo file (.jpg) of each person at no charge for CCBA publishing needs, including the CCBA member directories and Communiqué).

Portraits to You is currently the preferred provider of portrait services to the Clark County Bar Association.

Downtown Cultural Series

Public Speaking Opportunities Available for Attorney Members

The Clark County Bar Association is seeking attorney members to volunteer to speak to the crowd gathered for the performances scheduled as part of the “Downtown Cultural Series” held monthly inside the Linda Fitzgerald Jury Assembly Room at the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse.

Volunteer Requirements

Attorney speakers must be ready at the podium to start speaking by 11:50 a.m. and they must finish by 11:59 p.m. before the performers take the stage at noon. Only attorneys who are members of the Clark County Bar Association will be selected to speak. There is no charge for the attorney to participate with appearances limited to once per season.

Presentation Topics

Choose your own topic to present to the audience. The content should not be an advertisement for a law practice or election campaign. The topics of presentation are subject to approval and should be restricted to general legal matters. The length of the presentation is recommended to be limited to 2 to 4 minutes; presenters are allowed to prepare a flyer/brochure related to the subject matter that can be distributed at the event. Suggested topics include:

  • Local legal resources
  • Proposition for appellate level court for Nevada state system
  • Judicial selection process for local, state, and federal judges
  • Real estate & housing issues
  • Foreclosure mediation
  • Alternative dispute resolution
  • Jury and jury service
  • Landlord / Tenant issues
  • Foreclosure mediation
  • Alternative dispute resolution
  • Elder law issues
  • Living Wills
  • Probate and estate planning
  • Guardianship
  • Jurisdiction and practice before one of the local or state courts
  • Jurisdiction and practice before one of the local federal courts, including general jurisdiction trial court, bankruptcy court, tax court, Social Security Administration, immigration court, tax court, court of appeals for veterans claims, etc.

More about the Downtown Cultural Series

As free, public events, the demographic of the audience can vary. Past audiences have included visitors from local senior citizen centers, court staff, and locals simply enjoying their lunch watching talented performers. The series is produced by the City of Las Vegas’ Office of Cultural Affairs with cooperation by the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse. Performances vary and can include music, dance, and drama. The scheduled performers are subject to change without notice. See http://www.artslasvegas.org/. Admission to attend the event as part of the audience is free and open to the public. The performers take the stage at noon and generally finish by 1:00 p.m. There is a light lunch buffet available for all to enjoy during the event.

The CCBA hosts an induction ceremony for current member attorneys who have been in practice for 40 years and also recognizing the 40–Year Cub members on their 5th, 10th, and 15th Anniversary. The inductees are honored by their colleagues while the others celebrating their anniversary enjoy a lunch filled with good food, presentations, and reminiscing with a bit of humor thrown in on the side.

Meet Your Judges Mixer

The Meet Your Judges Mixer is one of the most popular, annual, networking events for the Clark County Bar Association (CCBA). Open to judges, attorneys, legal assistants, legal secretaries, law students, merchants, candidates, and their guests, this event provides an opportunity for individuals to meet members of the local, state, and federal judiciary in a casual, social setting. Attendance levels in past events average 600 people. Sponsorships are available for select local and national businesses to promote their products and services. Business casual attire acceptable. This is a cocktail reception; no minors allowed.

Memorial Service

Members of the bar are invited to join in remembrance of colleagues who have passed away. The Clark County Law Foundation’s Community Service committee hosts a memorial service honoring the members of the bar who have passed on in the last year. This service is a project of the Clark County Law Foundation’s community service committee in conjunction with the Clark County Bar Association, State Bar of Nevada, Eighth Judicial District Court, U.S. District Court and Federal Bar Association – Las Vegas Chapter.
