Pat Getter to Present Depo Tips at CLE Seminar for Lawyers – Feb. 5, 2015

On Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Noon the Clark County Bar Association will host an hour-long class of continued legal education for attorneys to learn how to better prepare deponents during trial preparation.

The CLE seminar “Deposition vs. Root Canal: Preparation Techniques to Make Dental Work the Only Painful Experience” will feature presenter Pat Getter a member of the team defending DuPont against lawsuits filed in the wake of a multibillion-dollar liability product recall.

Getter will provide tips based on the experience of being deposed three times after she left DuPont. Pat authored the book “Deposition vs. Root Canal: Preparation Techniques to Make Dental Work the Only Painful Experience.” Attend this live seminar to receive a complimentary copy of her book!

On Thursday, January 15, 2015, the Clark County Bar Association (CCBA) held its annual volunteer appreciation awards event at Mundo restaurant in Las Vegas. During the “Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon,” the CCBA’s executive board was sworn-in, a presentation about a local legal service agency was made, and awards were presented to local attorneys and businesses for their service to the bar during the past year. Highlights from the event follow.

The event began with the oath of office administered by Senior U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd D. George to the association’s incoming officers and directors. The following members will serve on the CCBA’s executive board during 2015:

Volunteers Needed to Judge UNLV Law School Competition

8th Annual In-House Negotiation Competition
Friday, January 30, 2015

Nevada attorneys, judges, and mediators are needed to step forward and volunteer to judge the competition rounds. Student teams will be negotiating scenarios regarding tort law. Judging the competition qualifies as pro bono publico service (pursuant to NRPC 6.1).

Event Schedule:
5:00 – 5:45 p.m. Dinner
5:45 – 5:55 p.m. Instructions to judges
6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Elimination Rounds
8:30 – 9:30 p.m. Final Round (top 10 teams compete)

At the end of the competition, while scores are being tallied, judges will be asked for feedback on how teams performed and what techniques could be improved. Winners of the competition will be asked to join the Society of Advocates and will represent the Boyd School of Law at the American Bar Association’s next regional negotiation competition.

EJDC Medical/Dental Malpractice Status Check Calendar – Tuesday, February 3, 2015

The Eighth Judicial District Court has announced that it will hold the next Medical/Dental Malpractice Status Check Calendar at 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2015. See Notice re: Medical/Dental Malpractice Status Check Calendar (PDF) at http://www.clarkcountycourts.us/.

The calendar will be held in Courtroom 10D on the 10th floor of the Regional Justice Center in downtown Las Vegas. The calendar will be heard in numerical case number order with the oldest case being heard first, as follows:

  • 2/3/2015 at 8:30 a.m. – Case No. A-08-556546-C through A-13-692029-C
  • 2/3/2015 at 1:00 p.m. – Case No. A-13-692642-C through A-14-710765-C

Attorneys are expected to bring a list of their cases for which they will be appearing to the hearing.

The Discovery Commissioner, Bonnie Bulla, will be available to address any discovery issues.

The court will work to enforce NRS 41A.061.1(b), and will attempt to set all medical/dental malpractice trials (not already scheduled) within two years of the date that the complaint was filed.

Supreme Court of Nevada Order Amends Rules Regarding the Preservation, Access, and Sealing of Court Records

On December 30, 2014, the Supreme Court of Nevada filed an administrative order (ADKT 0410) amending Rule 2 of the Policy for Handling Filed, Lodged, and Presumptively Confidential Documents; and amending Rule 6 of the Nevada Electronic Filing and Conversion Rules. The adoption of the amendments will be effective January 30, 2015. Volunteers Needed to Judge the Rebel Trojan All-In Mock Trial Tournament

The UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law, Greenspun College of Urban Affairs, and the University of Southern California are collaborating to host the “2015 UNLV-USC Rebel Trojan All-In Mock Trial Tournament” on Saturday, January 24 and Sunday, January 25, 2015. The event will be held on the UNLV campus at the Boyd Law School and Greenspun College. Parking is free. Both days will be catered with hot food and a selection of beverages.

Volunteers are necessary for one, or more, of four specific time slots*:

  • Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, January 25, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Sunday, January 25, 2015 from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The event organizers welcome practitioners and judges with civil and/or criminal experience to volunteer. Approximately 132 volunteers are needed to judge these trials. For this year’s competition, the students will present either the plaintiff or defense side in the civil case of Park v. Duran.

All tournament judges meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) be a member of any state’s bar, 2) possess a Juris Doctorate, or 3) have successfully completed an Evidence course at the law school level (AMTA alumni welcome).
